The Palo Alto Daily News

Published June 1, 2005

Dear Editor,

I was stunned upon reading Wayne Martin's recent letter (5/29/05) in your paper.  He has continually whined about the waste and inefficiency of the PAUSD, yet here he demonstrates how truly efficient our school district really is.  According to Mr. Martin’s letter, the PAUSD is spending half of what Chappaqua, New York spends and yet our students’ SAT scores are on par with the students in Chappaqua.  This is quite the ringing endorsement for the skillful way that the PAUSD is managed.  How can Mr. Martin begrudge the PAUSD an incremental $200 per parcel?  To spend on par with Chappaqua we would have to double our property taxes, not just add $200.  This nominal amount will not only continue to maintain the success that the PAUSD has achieved, but also ensure that our students continue to be educated as well rounded citizens with music and arts instead of just math and reading automatons.

Clearly, PAUSD gives a lot of bang for the buck.  I look forward to voting yes on Measure A, knowing that the parcel tax money will be spent wisely to produce a top educational product and topnotch students.
