Palo Alto Daily News

Dear Editor:

As the parent of an elementary school student, I have been reading with keen interest information published about Measure A.  Most recently, I saw statements that implied that PAUSD subsidizes teaching over 400 students who live on the Stanford Campus.  I decided to do a little research on this point.  What I found surprised me.

Close to 300 of the 400 students live on properties that pay full property and parcel taxes; no subsidy here.  In addition, Stanford pays parcel tax on all parcels, even those that are exempt from property tax.  In fact, property tax revenue from Stanford accounts for over 10 percent of PAUSD’s annual revenues.  So, with the 400 students representing less than 4% of students in PAUSD and Stanford contributing over 10% of PAUSD’s budget, I still can't find a subsidy.

Meanwhile, back at my elementary school, I am looking forward to Measure A passing so that our library will be open five days a week (instead of four), our class sizes will remain reasonable and we will be able to keep our wonderful teachers who are truly dedicated to our children's growth and learning.

I hope the voters fully understand the importance of passing Measure A and they have the opportunity to consider all facts around the issue.  Misleading the public is never good and only serves to cloud matters and confuse voters.
