The Palo Alto Daily News Published: May 18, 2005 To The Editor: We are student members of the JLS Site Council. The parcel tax approved in 2001 to help our schools is set to expire, and we urge voters to renew this tax in Measure A on June 7. The parcel tax in Palo Alto, if approved, will raise 9.3 million dollars a year, which will allow schools to get and keep good teachers and allow class sizes to decrease. Schools will get new books and other supplies, and the ratio of students to counselors will decrease. It will also help with students needing extra time to study English and math. Today, many physical education classes at JLS have more than 40 students, because of budget constraints. Such large PE classes have not been able to take swimming at JLS, because the instructors believe it unsafe to supervise large classes swimming. Other units have restraints, too, like baseball. There are other problems. One seventh grade science class does not have enough textbooks for all the kids. Some elective classes, like German, have been canceled. Other classes, like French, have very crowded classrooms because there are so many kids in each section. If the parcel tax fails, our schools will have to lay off some talented teachers, cancel school programs, and increase class sizes. The quality of our schools will drop, and with it the quality of our community. We, the students of JLS Middle School, would sincerely appreciate it if you would vote for Measure A on June 7. Sincerely, Hrishikesh Svinagesh, Jenny Guan, Constance Wu, and Natan Reddy
