Mr. John Barton
President of the Board
Palo Alto Unified School District
25 Churchill Avenue
Palo Alto, CA 94306-1099

Dear Mr. Barton,

Roche Palo Alto supports ballot Measure A, the important proposal by the Palo Alto Unified School District to increase and extend the 2001 parcel tax.  The need for Measure A funding is both clear and immediate.

More than ever, it is up to individual communities to step up to the plate to ensure the highest quality education possible.  Currently, this is needed to offset decreases in State funding, increases in enrollment, and other fluctuations such as decreases in commercial property tax revenues.

At our Palo Alto Research and Development center, we are working to advance science and understand the mechanisms of diseases so that we can discover new medicines.  Early quality education was essential for our employees, and the generation of their children deserves the same.  We must provide Palo Alto students with the strongest possible academic programs, taught by the best teachers, in classes that are sized to be most conducive to learning.  Measure A funding will support each of those critical areas.

As the world becomes relatively smaller and global competition increases, education is the single greatest investment for our future.  We join the School District and the many active citizens who support the passage of Measure A on June 7.

Sincerely,

Nancy Peterson
