Dear Mercury News Editors,

Thank you for Wednesday's articulate "Yes on A" editorial. I appreciate your emphasis on the importance of maintaining high educational standards; clearly, taking away from our students is not the way to go.

Let's face it:  Without good teachers we might as well not have schools.  Palo Alto teachers endure high rents and long commutes to be part of our education-minded community -- something they may have to reconsider if Measure A fails. Already they earn somewhat less than their counterparts in comparable districts nationwide.  If the measure fails, teachers will be laid off, class sizes will surge, and we all will be the losers.

Let's not become merely another materialistic Silicon Valley enclave; let's leave a legacy of education for our children.
