PAUSD Spending Compared to Other Top Nationwide School Districts

Print this Position Paper (pdf file)

PAUSD spends significantly less money per student than many other leading public school districts in the United States. The differences are even more pronounced after adjusting for the high cost of living in the Silicon Valley. Adjusted for cost of living differences, PAUSD:

** Spends 50 percent fewer dollars per student than the districts listed below

**  Employs 15 percent fewer teachers per student

**  Pays its teachers 27 percent less

Note:  Figures above are based on each school district’s 2004-05 projected expenditures collected in a telephone survey conducted in February and March 2005.  Different school districts may calculate their expenditures differently, and so these numbers may not be directly comparable.  Teacher salaries listed above do not include benefits.  Cost of living figures derived from www.homefair.com/homefair/calc/salcalc.html.

 * Mid-range (value halfway between highest and lowest paid teachers).
